Experience Japan’s beauty and history in a traditional Edo townhouse

HOJO EDO MACHIYA is a restored Edo-period townhouse, offering accommodation, an antique bookstore, a handmade soba restaurant, and a gallery & event space. The main house dates back to 1840, during the late Edo period, and three traditional storehouses (kura) remain in its spacious courtyard.

The owner, Shin Koyama, is an artist working across painting, printmaking, and ceramics. After spending nearly 40 years in Australia, he established his base in Arita, Japan’s historic centre of porcelain ware. He continues to work globally, engaging in creative projects in Jingdezhen, China, and Chiang Mai, Thailand. HOJO EDO MACHIYA was born from SHIN’s desire to bring the spirit of Edo back to life.

As of 2025, parts of the property are still under renovation, and many exciting projects are planned for the future. We hope you enjoy the rich culture and beautiful natural surroundings of Arita.
