Stay at HOJO

Hojo is a stately machiya townhouse built in 1840 during the late Edo period. Formerly the residence of the Yamaguchi family, it stands as a valuable example of a high-quality Edo-period machiya.

We offer two unique Japanese-style rooms at Hojo.

YUME NO HEYA

The Yume-no-Heya room is a spacious, open room located on the upper floor of the renovated kura (storehouse). It offers a view of the garden from the corridor surrounding the tatami room. By closing the fusuma (sliding panels), you can create a separate private space or a workroom as needed.

The Dokuro-no-ma room, located on the ground floor, is an artistic space showcasing skull artworks by owner-host Shin and local ceramic artist Otomo. Perfect for those seeking a playful yet slightly eerie atmosphere.

Notes

・As the house is a traditional kominka built in the late Edo period (1840), the stairs may be steep and slippery. Please take extra care especially when carrying luggage.

・Due to the nature of the wooden construction, the building is not highly airtight, and insects such as spiders may occasionally appear. We appreciate your understanding.

・Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate pets.

・From around April 2025, two cats are expected to start living on the property. The cats will roam freely both indoors and outdoors, so we kindly ask guests with animal allergies or those uncomfortable with cats to take this into consideration when booking. We greatly appreciate your understanding.

・The use of open flames is strictly prohibited on the property. Smoking is allowed only in designated outdoor areas.

・In addition to the gallery space in the kura (storehouse), there are two other kurason the property that have not yet been renovated. Kindly avoid entering these areas.

・From around March 2025 until the end of the year, renovation work is scheduled to be carried out on the two storehouses (kura) within the property. Whilst we will do our best to minimise any inconvenience, please note that there may be some noise during the daytime. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Thank you.
