ARITA UCHIYAMA HISTORIC DISTRICT

Both HOJO EDO MACHIYA and ZOKU IJINKAN are located in the Uchiyama historic district of Arita Town, Saga Prefecture. The Uchiyama district is located along Sarayama Street, which stretches approximately 2km from the former Upper Izumiyama Bansho Guardhouse to the former Lower Iwayagawachi Bansho Guardhouse. In 1991, the area was designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
The Great Bunsei Era Fire of 1828 ravaged the area, destroying many invaluable buildings and houses. Today, most of the remaining structures in the Uchiyama district were built after the fire. The district’s unique townscape features a blend of traditional Japanese and Western-style architecture from the late Edo (1603–1867), Meiji (1868–1912), Taisho (1912–1926), and early Showa (1926–1989) periods.
【中の原】Nakanohara
HOJO EDO MACHIYA is located in the Nakanohara area of the Uchiyama district, and the Shirakawa River flows right in front. Nakanohara, nestled between the hills to the south and the Shirakawa River to the north, is an entry point to the Uchiyama district from the Arita Station area. In this area, you can find large and stately machiya (traditional townhouses) from the late Edo period, rebuilt after the Great Bunsei Era Fire of 1828. Yasaka Shrine, the Hyakubasen Monument at Hoonji Temple, the ruins of the Hiekoba Kiln, and Sarugawa Gorge with Sarugawa Hachiman Shrine are all within walking distance. |
【赤絵町・幸平】Akae Machi/Kobira
ZOKU IJINKAN is located in the Akae-machi and Kobira areas within the Uchiyama district. Akae-machi once served as a hub for overglaze painting specialists, while Kobira was the centre of kiln operations, both of which played key roles in the Uchiyama area historically. This area is characterised by its unique scenery, dotted with historic shrines, temples, and Western-style buildings from the late 19th to early 20th century. The famous Tozan Shrine, the Imaemon Kiln, the Koransha porcelain company, and the memorial statue of Yi Sam-pyeong are all located near ZOKU IJINKAN. |
